Motor / Pump Protection Relays

These relays are useful for protection of 1 Ph. / 3 Ph. AC induction motors against various hazards. With their unique advantages they eliminate use of a Thermal / Bimetallic relay for motor protection. Being current sensing, they are to be selected according to motor rating and are available for practically all ranges of motors. These relays are ideally suitable for Air-conditioning Compressor motor protection, as also for motors in machines, conveyors, cranes / hoists and lifts and for pumps.

FAQs

It is an advanced electronic device designed to protect three-phase AC induction motors and pumps from a wide range of electrical faults and abnormal operating conditions. It replaces traditional bimetal thermal overload relays with a more precise and feature-rich solution.
Unlike a simple thermal relay that only protects against overcurrent, this comprehensive relay protects against multiple hazards simultaneously, including phase loss, voltage imbalance, under/over voltage, earth faults, and motor winding overheating (via PTC sensors). It offers adjustable settings and digital displays for precise control.

Minilec offers range of protection relays as:

Overload Protection: Protects against excessive current draw as per the motor’s specific characteristics.

Phase Failure (Single Phasing): Detects loss of one phase.

Phase Reversal: Detects incorrect phase sequence and prevents reverse rotation.

Voltage Unbalance: Protects against damage caused by uneven voltage supply.

Under Voltage & Over Voltage: Guards against supply voltage outside safe operating limits.

No-Load / Dry Running: Prevents pump damage by detecting when it is running without fluid.

Locked Rotor / Short Circuit: Provides instant protection against motor stall and severe over-current.

Earth Fault: Detects current leakage to earth (requires an external CBCT).

Motor Winding Overheating: Monitors direct motor temperature via PTC thermistor sensors.

Selection is based primarily on the motor’s full load current rating (in Amps) or its power rating (in HP/KW). You must ensure the relay’s current sensing range matches your motor’s specifications.
A CBCT (Core Balance Current Transformer) is a ring-shaped sensor that all three phase conductors pass through. It measures the vector sum of the currents. Under normal conditions, this sum is zero. Any leakage current to earth (an earth fault) creates an imbalance, which the CBCT detects and sends a signal to the relay to trip.

You need to specify:

  • Primary & Secondary Current ratings.
  • Inner Diameter (to ensure your power cables can fit through it).
  • Outer Diameter.
  • The specific Minilec relay model name it will be connected to.

Auto Reset: The relay will automatically attempt to reset itself and restart the motor after the fault condition clears and a pre-set time delay elapses.

Manual Reset: After a fault, the relay remains tripped until an operator physically presses a reset button. This is a critical safety feature to ensure the fault is investigated before restarting.

  • Comprehensive Protection: A single device replaces multiple simpler devices.
  • Precision: Microcontroller-based design and digital settings offer more accuracy than electromechanical relays.
  • Prevents Downtime: Protects expensive motors and pumps from catastrophic failure.
  • Flexibility: Adjustable trip settings and delays allow customization for specific applications.
  • Diagnostic Info: Models with LCD displays provide valuable information on the fault cause.
